Took my car in for an MOT on Tuesday, 1st May. Also asked them to make sure the exhaust was sealed properly as I had a suspicion that it was leaking. Failed the MOT, not a huge surprise but really nothing too major – but one of the advisories was a leak of exhaust gases, which I’d asked to be sorted before the test. Anyway, discussed with the garage what was to be done and who’d do what – I’d get new wipers, adjust the wheel bearings etc, and they’d source the brake pipe and steering rack boots that needed doing from their supplier, and they’d give me a call with a quote for parts, labour etc. Said they couldn’t fit me in that week but could certainly fit me in next week. Sorted, drove away, got the bits I needed, sorted the bearings, all good. However I did find, once I got back home, that they'd left the fuel cap insecure after the test, just sitting in the neck rather than clipped in and sealing the tank off, which could have caused some nasty problems if anything had leaked.

Come Friday (4th), still not heard from them, thought I’d give them a call: closed for bank holiday! Ah rats, a pain but not unreasonable. So I give them a call once they’re back open on Tuesday (8th), to see where they’re up to on sourcing bits and booking me in etc. The answer that I get is that they’ll find their file on my car, and get back to me. Spoiler alert: they didn’t. With the retest date quickly approaching, it became clear that they weren’t going to get the work done in time, and I didn’t have the time to faff about chasing them up.

To their credit, they were very friendly, and the mechanic advised me on the correct way to adjust my wheel bearings before I left etc, so they’re clearly a knowledgeable, capable bunch. But if they didn’t have time to do the work in the 14 days allowed for the retest, or didn’t want to do the work and would rather I’d taken it away to do myself and just brought it back for the retest, they should’ve said at the time, instead of leaving me in the dark without a roadworthy car for a week and a half and no time to do the work for the retest. Not going to speculate, I just don’t understand why, if they did actually plan on doing the work, they didn’t give me an actual time and date for the work when I collected the car after the MOT. Or when I called to remind them that I was waiting on contact from them to get the work done, they didn’t clarify – incredibly frustrating for what should’ve been a simple interaction.

Anyway, for the thrilling conclusion to this story: once it became clear that they weren’t going to call me with a quote and a date and I wasn’t going to get my free retest, I hopped online, bought the £23 worth of parts, called in a favour with a friend who has a car transporter trailer, got the car taken 200 miles to my dad’s house with a garage, spent a whole two hours doing the work highlighted in the MOT, plus another two cleaning up, checking over and tuning up, and sent it for an MOT at the nearest garage, where it passed.

Sincerest thanks to all for helping me resume my travels. After my breakdown in Glasgow, the recovery driver recommended Philips Garage who took my Audi in on short notice and after a few short hours I was back on the road. Thank you to the team who were very accommodating and did not take advantage of my misfortune by charging over the odds, great service and great price! I hope you enjoy the chocolates, just a small token of thanks for looking after me so well. Sincerely, Cressida
